PADI Staff Instructor Kelly Paterson on leaving behind the corporate ladder for the PADI career ladder
Bocas Dive Center is proud to boast a large number of female dive professionals. We celebrate diversity in diving every day. Ahead of PADI Women’s Dive Day on 17 July 2021, we profile some of our female dive professionals and their Scuba diving journeys.
Originally from Scotland, Kelly joined us as a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer in 2019. She is now a PADI Staff Instructor and our Marketing Manager at the dive shop.
I learned to dive because I saw a photo of a wreck in a Scuba magazine about 10 years ago. I thought - my eyeballs have to see this! It is amazing!
I wasn’t a great student, but I made it through my PADI Open Water Diver course. I even did a PADI Deep Adventure dive to go and see Manta Rays in Thailand. I finally finished my PADI Advanced Diver course and then various PADI Specialty courses, so that I felt fully prepared to do my dream dive. Finally - 9 months after I saw the photo, I was there diving on the Thistlegorm shipwreck.
I never thought about leaving my corporate career in Public Relations to become a professional Scuba diver. I loved my job and I loved spending my vacations Scuba diving. However, at some point, I realized that I wanted a different life - one that involved me being in the water. And more importantly - warmer water than Scotland.
My original plan was to take a sabbatical; however as managing director that wasn’t going to be possible, so I decided to go for it. I thought I would spend three months learning to become a PADI Divemaster through an internship in Belize. I really thought this was part of a mid-life crisis, (turning 40 years old was certainly a turning point!) but, soon I realized that I not only loved this new line of work - I could be good at it.
I worked with amazing Instructors who supported and encouraged me to go on to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. Once I did that, I had more support from within the dive community and soon I was using my business and people management skills as Head Instructor of a locally run dive shop in Honduras.
Then on the trail for adventure, I landed in Bocas Del Toro on the Caribbean Sea side of Panama. Here, again with the support of the team, I was encouraged to become a PADI Staff Instructor. Now, I can support our PADI Course Director in teaching the next generation of PADI Instructors at our Instructor Development Courses.
For someone that thought that they weren’t brave enough to start all over again, who didn't want to turn their hobby into their job, or ever want to teach someone; I am still waking up every day - smiling, ready to go to work in my new office - the ocean.

Aprendí a bucear porque vi una foto de un naufragio en una revista Scuba hace unos 10 años. Pensé: ¡mis globos oculares tienen que ver esto! ¡Es asombroso!
No fui un gran estudiante, pero superé mi curso PADI Open Water Diver. Incluso hice una inmersión PADI Deep Adventure para ir a ver mantarrayas en Tailandia. Finalmente terminé mi curso PADI Advanced Diver y luego varios cursos de especialidad PADI, así que me sentí completamente preparada para hacer la inmersión de mis sueños. Finalmente, 9 meses después de ver la foto, estaba buceando en el naufragio de Thistlegorm.
Nunca pensé en dejar mi carrera corporativa en Relaciones Públicas para convertirme en buceadora profesional. Me encantaba mi trabajo y me encantaba pasar mis vacaciones buceando. Sin embargo, en algún momento, me di cuenta de que quería una vida diferente, una que me implique estar en el agua. Y lo que es más importante, agua más cálida que Escocia.
Mi plan original era tomarme un año sabático; sin embargo, como directora gerente, eso no iba a ser posible, así que decidí hacerlo. Pensé que pasaría tres meses aprendiendo a convertirme en PADI Divemaster a través de una pasantía en Belice. Realmente pensé que esto era parte de una crisis de la mediana edad (¡cumplir 40 años fue sin duda un punto de inflexión!), pero pronto me di cuenta de que no solo amaba esta nueva línea de trabajo, sino que podía ser buena en ella.
Trabajé con instructores increíbles que me apoyaron y alentaron a convertirme en Instructor PADI Open Water Scuba. Una vez que hice eso, tuve más apoyo dentro de la comunidad de buceo y pronto comencé a usar mis habilidades de gestión empresarial y de personas como Instructora Principal de una tienda de buceo local en Honduras.
Luego, en el camino de la aventura, aterricé en Bocas del Toro en el lado del Mar Caribe de Panamá. Aquí, nuevamente con el apoyo del equipo, me animaron a convertirme en PADI Staff Instructor. Ahora, puedo apoyar a nuestro PADI Course Director en la enseñanza de la próxima generación de PADI Instructors en nuestros Instructor Development Courses.
Para alguien que pensó que no era lo suficientemente valiente para empezar de nuevo, que no quería convertir su pasatiempo en su trabajo, o que nunca quería enseñarle a alguien; Todavía me despierto todos los días, sonriendo, lista para ir a trabajar a mi nueva oficina: el océano.
