What is that fish?
Have you ever come up from a dive and excitedly tried to tell someone about a fish you saw during your dive, only to realize that you might as well have described every fish in the sea - yet, the dive leader was able to help you identify it.
In Bocas Del Toro we are lucky enough to benefit from warm tropical waters that boast more than 90% of all available coral found in the Caribbean Sea; this, coupled with spectacular sponge life, means that we have a massive variety of fish and creatures.
Our dive leaders have all taken the PADI Fish Identification specialty as we want to ensure that our divers feel that they got the best diving experience possible in the archipelago - that they saw everything that could be seen. We can only deliver this by ensuring that our staff are the most knowledgeable and this certification helps them get started.
As a result, our divers get to enjoy the wealth of their information about what they have seen on dives. We always spend time with our divers helping them log what they saw on their dives. Helping them use the fish identification guides to identify a specific fish that they saw or filmed. It is from this that most of our clients begin their interest in the Fish Identification course.
This enjoyment of knowing what it is that they are seeing during a dive enhances their diving experiences even further. The PADI Fish Identification course is not just teaching divers about what fish they are seeing on the dives, but how to identify the fish. What to look out for - not just its size, shape and colors, but its location, depth and reaction.
This is a two-dive specialty. The first dive focuses on identifying the fish families and drawing unfamiliar fish seen during the dive to identify later (noting habitat and abundance). The second dive brings all this knowledge together to organize a fish identification dive, focusing on the abundance of various fish using the roving diver technique.
The PADI Instructor will spend time before the dive explaining to students how to identify fish using key markings e.g. fin and tail type, the difference between bands and stripes, for example, or spots and blotches. Show students some common fish to the area and explain how you identify them or remember their name; e.g mutton snapper - looks like a snapper and has a ‘button’ on its side, which rhymes with mutton.
The PADI Fish Identification speciality gives you the opportunity to be able to identify fish families all over the world by learning more about them. Knowing where the fish are commonly found, for example in small burrows in the sand, helps you be able to look in the right places for the fish you want to see.

Este disfrute de saber qué es lo que están viendo durante una inmersión mejora aún más sus experiencias de buceo. El curso PADI de Identificación de Peces no sólo enseña a los buceadores qué peces están viendo en las inmersiones, sino cómo identificarlos. En qué fijarse, no sólo en su tamaño, forma y colores, sino también en su ubicación, profundidad y reacción.
Se trata de una especialidad de dos inmersiones. La primera inmersión se centra en la identificación de las familias de peces y en dibujar peces desconocidos vistos durante la inmersión para identificarlos más tarde (anotando el hábitat y la abundancia). La segunda inmersión reúne todos estos conocimientos para organizar una inmersión de identificación de peces, centrándose en la abundancia de varios peces utilizando la técnica del buceador errante.
El Instructor PADI dedicará tiempo antes de la inmersión a explicar a los alumnos cómo identificar los peces utilizando marcas clave, por ejemplo, el tipo de aleta y cola, la diferencia entre bandas y rayas, por ejemplo, o manchas y manchas. Muestre a los alumnos algunos peces comunes de la zona y explíqueles cómo identificarlos o recuerde su nombre; por ejemplo, el pargo cordero: se parece a un pargo y tiene un "botón" en el costado, que rima con cordero.
